Mapping of areas at risk and spot checks
The corrosion of embedded steel is the first cause of failure of reinforced concrete structures, both for its likelihood and for the dramatic consequences.
The most widely accepted methodology for its diagnosis is the half-cell potential measurement, based on the collection of electrical potential values on the concrete surface, highlighting the spots where active corrosion is ongoing. A natural complement to the half-cell potential method is the surface resistivity measurement, which defines the concrete ability to efficiently protect the embedded steel from corrosion. Both methodologies combined are able to provide a reliable mapping of the areas at risk and to define the priorities of the related remedy actions.
A further more recent approach to the corrosion analysis is based on the GPR survey; advanced data analysis of the signal features can deliver a reliable assessment of local concrete and reinforcement conditions, in form of 2D corrosion and deterioration maps.
Direct visual checks and chemical analysis complete the range of activities needed for providing a reliable statement on the structure conditions and for defining priorities and proper methods for the rehabilitation.
